EO team to Liberia February 2020
Team Focus: Education–our team worked at the school at Camphor Mission each day with teaching Math in grades 4-9 and working with teachers. The Pre-K through Grade 1 classes focused on crafts, songs, and phonics lessons. One missioner worked with various grade levels. She worked on telling time, and on English and spelling. Grades 2 and 3 made sock puppets and put on a variety of plays, acting out book stories and Bible stories. Our 16 year old, was wonderful with the young children. She looked like the pied piper on many occasions. One missioner spent much of her time repairing uniforms for various children and spent her evenings tutoring any child who asked. Other ways we served included Bingo in the evenings with prizes. Bingo was very popular with all, including students and staff. We provided funding to continue the sewing program started last year by the team. We even received 2 dresses made by the sewing students as a gift on our last day. Another event was the Days for Girls Sanitary Kit distribution. Gurly Blim, RN, from the Camphor clinic conducted the education portion with the girls, and conducted an education session with the boys. The boys had an enthusiastic response to their session! Forty DfG kits were distributed on a first come first served basis to the girls ages 12 and up. We had 46 girls at the session, so the remaining girls were given undergarments. Thirty eight boys ages 12 and up participated in the boys session. We also followed up with girls at the dorm to answer any remaining questions a couple days after the distribution. A major project came by way of a generous donor from her church. She donated money to have tile installed on the floor of the library at Camphor. We had a ceremony to celebrate, and the tile is beautiful and makes the library much cleaner. We also were able to purchase textbooks for Camphor Mission. We purchased 96 math books, 30 English, 30 social studies, and 30 science books to provide at least 5 classroom copies of each subject for grades 4-9. In addition, we purchased text books for the library at JL Morris UMS in Monrovia as well (working with Helen Roberts) which we were able to present while in Monrovia on Friday March 6. We started a fund to provide for teacher education at Camphor, and detailed the method for Camphor teachers to obtain those funds as the money left by last years team for teacher education was never received by any teachers. Other significant requests from Camphor include extensive agriculture plans with hopes of making the mission station self sufficient in the future. They also asked for a computer lab, and teacher college support. We met with the DS, Hezekiah Franklin, Sr. He requested support for a new Conference Center ($43,000 USD), a pick up truck for transportation, and also asked us to reach out in the St. John River District beyond Camphor Mission.
