The Nolte and Rollins scholarships encourage diversity among participants in Discover…Mission or TeachUM mission journeys.
TeachUM projects provide opportunities for persons of all ages to share God’s grace by using their specialized gifts, training, and experience in faithful service in educational projects around the globe. The TeachUM program began in 2003 as a way to provide mission opportunities for education professional. Examples of TeachUM teams include:
- Vacation Bible School.
- Teaching English as a Second Language.
- Teaching sewing, welding, or other life-sustaining skills.
- Youth and young adult leadership training.
- Any team that incorporates and education component.
Applicants must be

- Under 35 years old.
- Of non-white ethnicity.
- First-time participants of an education mission journey.
- Share the story of their mission experience with local.
- Share a written report of the experience with the UMVIM-NCJ office.
Beverly (Bev) Nolte grew up in a clergy family in Kansas. She served as a United Methodist missionary in Argentina and Brazil for 15 years and was a clergy spouse for 41 years. Bev served as. The United Methodist Volunteers in Mission coordinator of the North Central Jurisdiction for 16 years.
The Discover…Mission program encourages mission journeys that are an intentional cultural immersion with leadership skills that promote planning and implementing of mission journeys. Information on current Discover…Mission journeys can be found here.
Applicants must be:
- Between 18-35 years old.
- Of non-white ethnicity.
- Share the story of their mission experience with local churches and groups.
- Share a written report of the experience with the UMVIM-NCJ office.
- Lead a mission journey within three years of the Discover…Mission experience.
William (Bill) Rollins was the first and only Volunteer In Mission Staff person for the United Methodist Church. For over 12 years, Bill assisted a vast number of persons from all over the Methodist Connection as they developed their VIM program. This Scholarship was established in Bill’s name for young adults who are accepted as participants of a Discover…Mission team.
