Hinton Center’s Mission Outreach Program offers year-round opportunities for mission teams, church and civic groups, families, and individuals. Serve for a week or weekend on Safe and Healthy Home Repair projects in our Appalachian community. Projects may include: building ramps, porches, and steps; underpinning mobile homes; painting; repairing floors; and yard work. We emphasize relationships! Through hands-on work and “walking alongside” our neighbors, mission participants open themselves to being served in return, learning that we all have needs and we can help each other. We focus on serving Clay and Cherokee counties, NC, and Towns County, GA. We serve folks who live in poverty, many of whom are single parents, the elderly, individuals with disabilities, or people who are underemployed or unemployed. We encourage all of our volunteers to build relationships with the neighbors they serve and to learn their stories. Mission teams and local volunteers truly impact the lives of our neighbors. Since spring of 2023, over 50 homes have been worked on, with more than 200 projects completed. Our local Woodchucker volunteers lead the efforts in our firewood ministry, helping provide 700 truckloads of firewood annually. GROW Our staff incorporate learning goals into every part of our mission outreach programming. One goal is for each participant to grow in understanding Appalachian culture and rural poverty. While there are unique dynamics and challenges, there are also unique assets. Another goal is spiritual growth. We offer intentional time for learning more about and reflecting on Christ’s teaching to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. Community building is also a goal, for your group to grow in relationship with one another and others you encounter. RETREAT Your time at Hinton will include lots of physical labor, however, you’ll also experience the hospitality of being a guest at our comfortable retreat facilities. Enjoy afternoons at the lake, playing corn hole, taking a prayerful walk at our labyrinth, and enjoying delicious meals by our dining staff. Although we focus on serving our local community, we also want you to have a formative time to rest, reflect, and renew.

Volunteers are needed to build new homes from the ground up and at all stages of construction. No experience needed. Volunteers are needed to perform "Brush With Kindness" projects. These are exterior minor home repairs as well as yard clean up. Both these activities are in partnership with low to mid income residents. Homeowners are required to work alongside volunteers. We coordinate for our volunteer groups to do a variety of service throughout their week at local organizations. Organizations can change year to year; but typically volunteers will be volunteering at a food bank; domestic violence shelter; refugee resettlement agency; urban sustainability farm; beautification project; or homeless/wrap around services agency. Each of these organizations has professional volunteer coordination; and they plug in our groups depending on the age range and the day-to-day needs of the organization. Activities can range from sorting and organizing food donations; stuffing backpacks for a give-away; sorting through clothing donations; pulling weeds in an urban garden; giving out food directly to the unhoused community on the streets; cleaning apartments that are being prepared for women entering a domestic violence housing program; and much more.

Solar Oven Partners is an Advance Special mission founded and located in the Dakotas Annual Conference. Through this mission, volunteers manufacture components of solar ovens which we ship, unassembled (Ikea-style, as I like to describe it) to the locations where they will be distributed, currently the Dominican Republic and Sierra Leone and The Navajo Nation in New Mexico and Arizona. Volunteers in Mission travel to these locations to assemble ovens and assist in the two-day cooking seminar for oven recipients. We cook in the ovens with the recipients and conclude each seminar with a meal of solar-cooked food.

Operation Classroom is a non-profit organization that partners with the United Methodist Church in Liberia and Sierra Leone in an effort to empower the people to rise out of poverty through education. Operation Classroom in partnership with Liberia United Methodist Church provides scholarships for young women and men to attend Secondary School. These students' progress is carefully monitored by our partners in Liberia to assure the students grades, attendance and conduct are meeting the requirement of their scholarship. Our support is particularly important to help boost the teacher salaries as UM schools do not receive government support for their teachers. In Sierra Leone, we have scholarships for assisting the Secondary Schools by covering the fees of students who need assistance. These students are monitored to be sure they are meeting the requirements of the scholarship. Less and less support is needed for the UM Schools because the government is funding teacher salaries for all certified teachers. The Taiama Enterprise Academy (TEA) is an innovative boarding school that has the potential to break the cycle of poverty through developing the entrepreneurial side of creative, hard-working young men and women.
